Prologue

The novel opens with Charlie Mannings, the pilot for Flight 180, eating a sandwich as he watches an airline engineer finishing up work on Flight 180.

Chapter One

Alex Browning is packing up for his upcoming school trip to Paris. During the night before the trip, a light breeze goes through Alex's room. Unknowingly to Alex, the alarm clock flickers, reading 1:80 am before returning to normal.

  • Alex Browning: A superstitious high school student and the one to foresee the crash of Flight 180.
  • Clear Rivers: A high school student who feels the strong emotions of Alex.
  • Carter Horton: A high school jock who is the rival to Alex and Terry's boyfriend. The fifth to die, he was crushed to death by a sign after saving Alex.
  • Billy Hitchcock: A high school student with a fondness for food. The fourth to die, he was decapitated through his jawline by car wreckage launched in his direction by a train.
  • Valerie Lewton: A high school teacher who is the most affected of the group by letting a co-worker back on Flight 180 before it crashed. The third to die, she is killed during a house fire when a chair pushes a knife that fell into her chest further into her.
  • Terry Chaney: A high school student and Carter's girlfriend. The second to die, she is hit by a speeding bus.
  • Tod Waggner: A high school student is the best friend of Alex and who loses his brother, George Waggner, in the crash of Flight 180. The first to die, he is asphyxiated to death after a clothesline is coiled around his neck.
  • William Bludworth: A mysterious, agitated man with great knowledge about Death and it's power.
  • Agent Shreck and Agent Weine: Two FBI agents who are suspicious of Alex after the deaths of several Flight 180 survivors.

Differences from the film

  • The book has a short prologue centering on Charlie Mannings, the replacement for Flight 180's scheduled pilot (who had been involved in an automobile accident and called in injured).
  • Alex's full name is revealed to be Alexander Chance Browning.
  • After ripping the old flight tag off of Alex's luggage, Mrs. Browning lifts the bag up, causing several more flight tags Alex had collected over the years to tumble out of an open pocket.
  • Clear's metal sculpture of Alex is revealed to be of the wreckage of Flight 180.
  • Agent Shreck is married to a nurse named Trudy who is unable to have any children due to her infertility.
  • After visiting the morgue, Alex has a nightmare involving Tod, the bodies of the dead Flight 180 passengers, Clear's metal sculpture, the premonition of the Flight 180 crash, and William Bludworth.
  • There is a scene where Agent Weine questions William Bludworth about Alex just as he prepares Terry's body.
  • There is a scene where Agent Schreck nearly electrocutes himself while trying to save his fish.
  • There is a scene where Billy and Carter search for Alex.
  • There is a scene where Agent Wiene imagines a sexual fantasy involving Trudy while on a stakeout with Agent Schreck.
