Plot

Prologue

At the hospital, Kate Shelly was invited to participate in a game of Sux racing with her fellow medical students. After Kate revived the first student to participate, it was now her turn. She received the shot of anesthetic and quickly experienced the feeling of numbness throughout her body. Kate collapsed to the floor, unable to move a muscle. One of the students quickly rushed over to Kate with a ventilator and an oxygen tank. However, Kate could only watch in horror in her paralyzed state when she heard the tank was jammed. She tried to breathe, feeling the oxygen in her body run out. Out of the sudden, Kate was above her own body, surrounded by the other students trying to revive her. Despite being left with only her consciousness, she still clung to life and forced herself down to her body. As she floated down, she became terrified as she noticed the gruesomely grotesque and bloody bodies that replaced the ones of her fellow students. Kate screamed and continued to scream when she awoke.

Chapter One

Across the world, several teenagers are either on their way or preparing for a cultural trip exchange. Two hours before her flight to New York, Rinoka Aratusu was partying with her friends at a club in Japan. Meanwhile in New York, Kate woke up from her reoccurring nightmare of being chased by giant maggots, annoying her boyfriend, Brad. In Germany, Peter spoke to his father and paid a visit to his mother's grave before his trip to New York. Back in New York, Kate personally witnesses a fiery car crash on her way to work with Brad. In Denmark, Bodil Raden was boarding her plane to New York. On the plane, she unknowingly meets with another student on the same trip, James Barker. In Philadelphia, Louise King is speeding on her motorbike through the countryside, racing her brother Danny King to New York. Somehow, Louise managed to beat Danny to Murray Hill Hostel, the hotel the students would be staying at. She already acquainted herself with the other teens who arrived in New York by the time Danny arrived. Danny is introduced to each student and Mary-Beth Bradbury, who is overseeing the cultural exchange trip. Unbeknownst to the group, they are being watched by Kate, who gets a sense of dread when she peers into the window. All she could see were their shadows in the demonic red light of the sunset.

Epilogue

In the wake of Kate's suicide, Danny and Louis went somewhere to the mountains for a little bike race, thinking about how he felt bad when their classmates died from the past during these disasters ever since. When Danny gears up, his sister unknowingly cut the brakes loose of his mountain bike while adjusting before getting ready. The race begins as Danny crank up the speed of his bike by revving up the gearshift, only to find that he can't use the brakes causing the bike to go faster. As he head for the cliff, Louis watched him die after being hurtled with the ravine because Death has someone else to serve with.

Main Characters

  • Daniel King: A Californian high-school graduate and the twin brother of Louise King. The main protagonist, Danny is the one who saw the vision of the train crash in the story. The eighth to die, he is sent hurtling into a ravine after the brakes on his motorbike fail to stop.
  • Louise King: A Californian cross-country bike rider and the twin sister of Danny King who joins him on his college trip to New York City. The seventh to die, she dies of an accidental injection of lidocaine but is brought back to life. Months later, she accidentally cuts the brakes on Danny's motorbike, inadvertently causing his death.
  • James Barker: A snobby and obnoxious college student from England. The sixth to die, he was impaled all over his body by sharp umbrellas after being thrown into a department store alongside Bodil in a wild series of events.
  • Bodil Raden: A pot-head college student from Denmark. The fifth to die, she was impaled all over her body by sharp umbrellas after being thrown into a department store alongside James in a wide series of events.
  • Mary-Beth Bradbury: An elderly woman who hosted the college trip and lost her baby after a hit-and-run from her husband decades before the events of the novel. The fourth to die, she was brutally decapitated by a flailing chainsaw.
  • Jack Cohen: A 99-year-old Jewish man who was ready to accept his fate with Death. The third to die, he accidentally pulled out part of his brain after he fell on a corkscrew that impaled him in the eye.
  • Peter Hoffman: An extremely religious college student from Germany who lost his mother during childbirth. The second to die, he was impaled through his torso by the horns of a gazelle after falling into its enclosure.
  • Rinoka Aratsu: A party-going college student from Japan who's into anime and the underground life. The first to die, she was crushed by an overflowing bathtub above her room in a hospital.
  • Kate Shelley: A nurse in medical school who recklessly died during a session of Sux racing with her friends but came back to life. She unknowingly became a servant of Death and wound up causing or playing a part in almost every death in the novel. She committed suicide by stabbing herself with a syringe after finding out she was responsible for the deaths, and in order to save Danny.
