| The survivors of Flight 180 died in the exact order they were originally meant to die in the plane crash. That was Death's original design. The list.
|
Death's list is the set of people who are meant to die under Death's design, a plan which regulates the events and ultimate demise of everyone in the world. If someone deviates from or "cheats" the death that is set for them, Death will then create a new design and come back for them, usually causing them a more vicious and brutal end.
If multiple people escape their intended deaths, then Death will kill them in the order they were meant to die in originally, though it can deviate from this rule in multiple ways:
- "The Butterfly Effect": Death's list can extend to those beyond the original list. In Final Destination 2, the Route 23 survivors are killed in reverse order to seal the rift caused by the survival of the Flight 180 survivors. To explain, the first five Flight 180 survivors to die (Tod Waggner, Terry Chaney, Valerie Lewton, Billy Hitchcock, and Carter Horton) inadvertently intervened in the original fates of all of Route 23 survivors and their deaths. This caused those survivors to be piled up on a list based on who intervened in their deaths. Furthermore, people such as Brian Gibbons, Isabelle Montoya, and Molly Harper had lives that were interfered with by survivors on Death's list, which resulted in them ending up on the list themselves.
- Changing the Order of Death Pre-Disaster: Alex Browning and Jonathan Groves both changed the order in which they were targeted in Final Destination and The Final Destination respectively when they sat in different seats than they did in their premonition disaster, enabling them to survive longer than they would've originally. In addition to them, Wendy Christensen and Kevin Fischer were originally meant to sit behind Ashley Freund and Ashlyn Halperin, but Frankie took their seats and they both agreed to be last in line, causing their positions to be switched before the premonition accident.
- Intervention: Occurs when someone intervenes in one's death, saving them. If the interventionist is another survivor on Death's list, the person who was saved may be skipped, allowing Death to target the next person on the list. However, the cycle will continue until all survivors are either claimed by Death or able to cheat the list.
- Final Destination: This has been achieved by Carter Horton, Clear Rivers, and Alex Browning.
- Between the first and second film, Alex and Clear saved each other dozens of times until Alex died.
- Final Destination 2: This has been achieved by Thomas Burke and Kimberly Corman
- Final Destination: Dead Reckoning: This has been achieved by Eric Prescott.
- Final Destination: End of the Line: This has been achieved by most of the 34th Street survivors. However, Danny King was saved twice before meeting his end.
- Final Destination: Dead Man's Hand: All of the Merlin's Tower survivors had achieved this.
- Final Destination 3: This has been achieved by Wendy Christensen, Julie Christensen, Kevin Fischer, and Ian McKinley.
- Final Destination: Death of the Senses: This has been achieved by Amy Tom, Katie Astin, Joshua Cornell III, and Jack Curtis.
- The Final Destination: This has been achieved by Janet Cunningham, Lori Milligan, and Nick O'Bannon.
- Final Destination: This has been achieved by Carter Horton, Clear Rivers, and Alex Browning.
- Self-Intervention: Occurs when someone on Death's list manages to save themselves from dying. Depending on the timing of the intervention and whether or not the person was warned by someone else on Death's list, the person may cheat Death and therefore be skipped, allowing Death to target the next person on the list. However, the cycle will continue until all survivors are either claimed by Death or cheated the list.
- Final Destination: End of the Line: This has been achieved by Bodil Raden and James Barker. Due to being warned by Danny King, they avoided being crushed by a falling MRI scanner, which resulted in them being skipped.
- Final Destination: Death of the Senses: This has been achieved by Joshua Cornell III. Due to being warned by other survivors on Death's list, this resulted in being skipped when Death tried to claim him.
- Preventing the Disaster from Occurring or Taking Lives: Occurs when someone on Death's list manages to somehow stop a disaster from occurring or somehow removes those on Death's list from the situation. Depending if the situation was truly avoided death or was a set-up, those on Death's list who were intended to die may be skipped.
- Final Destination: End of the Line: This has been achieved by Danny King, as he saved himself and the remaining survivors of 34th street from being crushed by a falling MRI scanner, allowing everyone, including himself to be skipped.
- Final Destination: Dead Man's Hand: This has been achieved by Allie Goodwin-Gaines, as she prevented herself and every other Merlin's tower's survivors from dying in a near-collision with a tank truck when they were being escorted in a police van, allowing everyone, including herself to be skipped.
- The Final Destination: This has been achieved by Nick O'Bannon who prevented the Tagert Theatres disaster, allowing everyone, including himself to be skipped.
- Final Destination Bloodlines: This has been achieved by Iris Campbell who avoided The Sky View tragedy, allowing everyone in the tower, including herself and Paul Campbell, to be skipped.
- Creating New Life: If the survivor of a disaster manages to live long enough to have descendants, those descendants are added onto Death's list. The same rules apply for the patriarchy of the unintended bloodline and their descendants.
- This has been achieved by the Skyview tower survivors.
- Due to Final Destination Bloodlines altering this rule, it is currently unknown if Cabernet and her son Sky Foster are still alive.
- This has been achieved by the Skyview tower survivors.
- Cheating Death Permanently: Using the rule that "only new life beats Death", one can cheat Death for good by dying and then being revived, doing such will "break the chain" and allow the others on the list to survive. One can also cheat by causing the death of someone who was not meant to die and taking their lifespan, allowing them to live until the day the person was meant to die.
- New Life has been achieved by Juliet Collins, Kimberly Corman, Thomas Burke, Jessica Golden, Jamie, Patricia Fuller, and Louise King.
- In Final Destination Bloodlines, it is revealed that failing to break the chain will result in a more gruesome demise or allow you to be added onto death's list for attempting to aid someone in cheating it. Erik Campbell is added onto Death's list, despite not being Howard Campbell's biological son after attempting to aid Bobby Campbell in dying and being resuscitated. Stefani Reyes and Charlie Reyes meet a violent demise in a train derailment after also attempting to cheat death.
- Kill or Be Killed has been achieved by Nathan Sears, Peter Friedkin, and Sam Lawton.
- Due to the rule only being added in Final Destination 5, it is currently unknown if the rule worked on Eugene Dix, Bill Sangster, Louise King, Warren Ackerman, and Jack Curtis.
- New Life has been achieved by Juliet Collins, Kimberly Corman, Thomas Burke, Jessica Golden, Jamie, Patricia Fuller, and Louise King.
Cheating Death[]
Successful Methods[]
Intervention[]
Intervening in someone's death as someone who is on Death’s list can hinder the design and cheat death, but it will only skip the one who was saved. After the first turn, Death will turn back to the one who was saved before and the cycle will continue until all survivors are either claimed by Death or able to cheat the list. Saving yourself or being saved by someone who isn’t on Death’s list does not count. Furthermore, it is revealed in Final Destination Bloodlines that if someone not on Death's list intervenes in a marked person's death, they are skipped, and Death goes straight to the person who helped.[2] This rule can't defeat Death at all.
Stalemate[]
A survivor can force a stalemate with Death by locking themselves in a place where Death cannot cause an accident that will take their life. While this method does not defeat Death, it gives the survivor the option to stay there until they die of old age, so when they finally die, it'll be on their terms, not Death's. However, it is confirmed that if Death is unable to claim a life because of this, he will somewhat give up and give the person a deadly disease so that they can eventually be claimed by their body giving out rather than him using external forces.
- Alex Browning intended to do that by locking himself in a fortified cabin. Once he realized it was not his time to die, but Clear's, he left the cabin and rushed to save her.
- Clear Rivers was able to bring herself and Death to a stalemate by locking herself away in an Asylum; she could not leave and Death could not get her. When she subsequently left the Asylum, she ended the stalemate and was subsequently killed by Death.
- Iris Campbell locked herself away in a cabin in the woods for two decades, with her knowledge to cheat death. Unable to reach Iris, Death gave her cancer instead. Once Iris finally left the cabin, Death swiftly ended her life. Darlene Campbell later intended to lock herself away in the same cabin, so Death couldn't move on to her children, but Death blew up the cabin before she had the chance, thus preventing another stalemate.
Making a Deal with Death[]
As seen in Final Destination: Looks Could Kill, Stephanie "Sherry" Pulaski makes a deal with Death to get her face back by taking the life of her friends. Death spares her from his list and restores her looks as long as she works for him, indicating that Death is willing to make deals to remove someone from his list - but only for as long as they do his bidding; as soon as Sherry changes her mind and saves someone Death was intending to kill in childbirth, Death runs her over and kills her.
New Life[]
According to William Bludworth, only new life can beat Death. One can cheat Death for good by dying and then being revived, since doing such will "break the chain" and allow the others on the list to survive. In Final Destination 2, Kimberly Corman beat Death by attempting to drown in a lake. She "died" for a short period of time before she was resurrected by a doctor, thus granting herself new life and removing herself and Thomas Burke from the list. New Life has also been achieved by Juliet Collins, Jessica Golden, Jamie, Patricia Fuller, and Louise King. However, in Final Destination Bloodlines, Bludworth adds that this method is extremely difficult to achieve, and it is shown that Death will try and prevent the survivor from doing so and punish them with a brutal death, like it did with Erik and Bobby Campbell.
Unsuccessful Methods[]
Creating new life[]
In an alternate ending of Final Destination, Clear Rivers had a baby with Alex Browning (although he is dead), so she and Carter Horton beat Death. However, this ending is non-canon.
In Final Destination 2, it was believed that if a survivor has a child, it creates "New Life" and thus invalidates Death's list. However, Final Destination Bloodlines proved this to be untrue, because this method does not stop Death or break the chain, it only extends the list to the new life that was never supposed to exist. If a person on Death's list has an entire family, Death will go down the bloodline from oldest to youngest until the whole bloodline is as it was always meant to be, no longer.
Steal another's life[]
According to William Bludworth, if you kill someone who is not in Death's design, you as the person who was to already to be dead but had cheated Death, receive the remaining life left from the person you killed. Peter eloquently calls this "kill or be killed".
Three instances of this occur in Final Destination 5. Nathan kills Roy, receiving his few remaining days; Roy having an illness that would have killed him shortly anyways. Nathan thus dies shortly after, but not in the original order of death planned by Death, only as the time of death for Roy originally. Peter kills Block, avoiding Death's schedule. Similarly, Sam kills Peter, avoiding Death's schedule. Sam dies shortly after, as Block had been scheduled to die not long after his actual death.
In Final Destination Bloodlines, this is discussed by Erik Campbell and Bobby Campbell. While in the hospital, they look at an infant in a bassinet nearby, however they ultimately decide against it for two reasons. Firstly, they are morally opposed, and secondly they admit one major flaw with murder: you cannot determine the remaining life of a victim (it actually happened both Nathan and Sam in Final Destination 5 as people whose lives they gained had only days remaining). Even if they did indeed kill an infant, if said infant were intended to die young from health complications, they would only buy themselves a short time period dying anyways. A next good reason against this was mentioned by Peter in Final Destination 5 - it could end with them spending their new lives in prison.
In Final Destination: Destination Zero, it is revealed that Bill Sangster, who was meant to die in the Mornington Crescent explosion, is a serial killer known as Jack the Ripper and has killed at least five people within four months. His first victim after the explosion that was meant to kill Bill, Annie Chapman was killed a day later. He would then died shortly after 5 days. This would imply Annie was going to die of some unknown cause that very night Bill died.
Suicide[]
If it's not your time to die, Death won't let you kill yourself. This happened to Eugene Dix and George Lanter. It was also tested by Carter Horton when he wanted to "gain control" of his life (and it was turn to die at this moment). He drove his car quickly through the traffic trying to kill himself (he would probably kill Clear, Alex and Billy too), but stopped on train tracks waiting for the train to claim his life. Eventually he said "its not my time to die", and unsuccessfully tried to start his car. However, it's revealed in Final Destination 5 that if it's not your time to die, you can't commit suicide, but the other survivors may be able to kill you. This cannot be proven, since Peter didn't succeed in taking Molly's life, and that it was Peter's turn to die anyway.
In a deleted scene of Final Destination 2, Kimberly Corman drove a car through chaotic traffic and wasn't harmed by them. In a deleted scene of The Final Destination, Janet Cunningham walked through a street and wasn't harmed.
In Final Destination 3, Ian McKinley had a theory that involves Newton's 3rd law of motion (every action has an equal & opposite reaction): if the last person on the list committed suicide, then the rest of the survivors would truly beat Death's design. However, as last one on the list, Wendy Christensen never listened to Ian anyway, it's unknown whether or not Ian's idea is true. However, in an alternate ending of The Final Destination, the last one on the list, Nick O'Bannon thought he could defeat death by committing suicide.
He jumped out of the mall and landed on a police car and was killed. Nick's action revealed the result of Ian's theory. After Nick's death, Lori Milligan and Janet Cunningham who were the only survivors left on the list, were crushed by an air conditioning unit. This shows that even if the last person on the list kills themselves, the rest of the survivors still can't beat Death. However, seeing as this happened in an alternate ending, it's not meant to be considered canon.
Also in an alternate ending for Final Destination. Alex Browning ended up committing suicide by sacrificing himself in order to save Clear Rivers. In that ending both Clear Rivers and Carter Horton ended up living, however, it should be noted that Clear was pregnant with hers and Alex's baby thus bringing in the "new life" rule into effect so thus it is unknown if it was Alex's suicide/sacrifice or the new life that saved them (not to mention that this ending is not canon at all). It's also worth mentioning that if one of Death's targets gives birth, the child will simply be added to the list.[3]
In Final Destination: Looks Could Kill, Sherry Pulaski tries to commit suicide by hanging, but Death breaks the chair before she can put herself on the noose.

Overall, the best at surviving was Clear Rivers. While both Alex and Clear were able to skip death dozens of times between them, Alex eventually died first, with Clear surviving a few more near-death experiences. Out of the seven survivors, only Clear Rivers, Alex Browning, and Carter Horton managed to skip death at least once, making for a 3:7 ratio, or 57% of the survivors dying first time.

Notes:
- An asterisk * denotes a survivor of the Sky View disaster.
- Iris's map of Death's victims is in chronological order. The timeline starts at the left side of the map and progresses to the right.
- The order of the survivors' real-life deaths does not necessarily align with that of their premonition deaths. There are several reasons and factors one might cite. This may include the fact that Iris saved hundreds of people by preventing the disaster from ever happening, as opposed to saving only a few survivors like what happened in the previous movies.
Overall, in the Campbell bloodline, nobody skipped their initial deaths. This means that 100% of the family members died the first time. As for the other bloodlines, determining the ratio is impossible because all of their deaths happened off-screen.

This results in him being targeted and he end up dying from being pulled into an MRI machine and crushed by wheelchair.

Mentioned Lists[]
Throughout the franchise, there have been multiple mentions, either in the forms of newspapers and online articles, of either accident survivors or disaster survivors dying after near misses.
In The Final Destination, Nick O'Bannon and Lori Milligan find documents on Google of survivors of disasters who died afterwards in freak accidents, finding:
- Several people, including a man named Brian Gibbons, who survived a disaster known as the Lakeview fire, all of whom later died, with Brian perishing in a backyard incident.[18]
- A possible list involving Pam Smith and Craig Perry, who were killed in an accident at a hardware store years after witnessing the death of Brian Gibbons.
In Final Destination: Destination Zero, Patricia Fuller finds multiple documents and newspapers mentioning survivors of disasters who died afterwards in freak accidents, finding:
- Eight Marines who avoided a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, all of whom died within a month in various ways, including:
- A hit and run
- A kitchen fire
- A boating accident
- Five surfers who avoided a freak wave in Australia, all of whom died within two weeks.
- Seven medical students who avoided a yacht explosion and sinking in Japan, four of whom died within a week, with the remaining survivors going missing.
- Six people who avoided a bridge collapse in Ontario, Canada, five of whom died within a month, including the visionary, with the only other survivor going missing.
In Final Destination: End of the Line, Danny King and Kate Shelley search on the internet for survivors of disasters who died afterwards in freak accidents, finding:
- Four people who avoided a cruise ship disaster on the Danube River, including a woman who later died in a freak accident.
- A wreck survivor who was later killed in a freak accident.
- A girl who survived being drowned and was later burned to death.
- A boat crash survivor who was later crushed by a falling tree during a lightning storm.
- A plane crash survivor who was boiled to death in a kitchen accident a week later.
- An old woman who avoided a building collapse in Britain only to be run over by a truck a day later.
- A young boy who survived a car crash in Ukraine only to be run over by a train.
- A mother and her baby who avoided being murdered in Spain only to fall to their deaths two days later.
- A man who avoided a drive-by shooting in Texas only to be accidentally shot by his own son.
- A woman who managed to avoid a fire in San Diego only to later drown in a flash flood.
Trivia[]
- May 13th, 2005 is the only known day where two different people have a premonition of a major accident on the same day.

- ↑ Final Destination Bloodlines invalidates the theory that if you give birth while on the list, it counts as new life.
- ↑ In the novelization, the order of the deaths are different. In an attempt to save Erin, Ian’s grip slipped and he fell. Erin was able to grab onto his hand but the force of the catch caused her to fall with him. While Erin died instantly, Ian was severely injured from the fall. Julie fell and died instantly, followed by Perry. After Perry’s death, Ian succumbed to his wounds and bled to death.
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 Initially, Alex would have sat closer to the Flight 180 explosion. But, because Alex didn't exactly changed seats with Christa Marsh and Blake Dreyer like he would have in the premonition, Death treated as if Alex had stayed in his original seat. This inadvertently made Alex switch his original position on Death's list with Clear.
- ↑ Depending on how you view it, Shaina, Frankie, and Dano may have not been part of the list. While they survived the initial pileup, they still died after being struck by a car hauler and were counted as casualties in the pileup, while Kimberly would've killed this way too if it weren't for Thomas, who intervened at the last moment and pulled her out of the way.
- ↑ 7.0 7.1 The oxygen explosion that kills Eugene and Clear also sends a trolley flying towards Thomas and Kimberly. During that time, Thomas is shown slightly closer to the door than Kimberly. If it weren't for each of them pulling the other down before being hit by the trolley, both Thomas and Kimberly would of died.
- ↑ There has been much confusion to whether Kimberly and Thomas actually died. In an alternate ending of Final Destination 3, the two were shown to have died in a newspaper article, though the information shown in this ending is not confirmed to be canonical.
- ↑ While it is assumed that Wendy avoided her death by saving herself from being hit by fireworks, an alternate theory postulates that she was unintentionally saved by Ian McKinley, who stopped her from reaching the first aid tent and getting in the way of the cherry picker, which was initially supposed to crush her. After all, this would explain the clue of the McKinley Grad Night shirt, as it would hint to both Ian and the cherry picker.
- ↑ Within the novelization of Final Destination 3, Wendy realizes that she would die after noticing the reflection of herself matching her photo of herself on a balloon during the chaos at the McKinney Tricentennial. The photo shows her holding Jason with a dark background behind them. During this time, she was holding an injured Kevin during the night. At the result of her realization, she looked around and realized the wind moving and the fireworks going off. Had she not, the firework that damaged the cherry picker that crushed Ian would have hit her. The novelization, although not canon, is based on an earlier draft of the film. Thus, this may or may not be intended.
- ↑ 11.0 11.1 11.2 There is a lot of doubt as to whether or not the last three survivors died in the Train 081 derailment, as their deaths only occurred in a premonition and the ending to the film was left ambiguous. Though the derailment likely occurred as shown, it's possible that the three were able to mitigate its effects and avoid their deaths altogether.
- ↑ While in the theatrical version, Wendy's fate is ambiguous due to her death being a premonition, producer of the Final Destination series, Craig Perry confirmed that Wendy is dead in an retrospective interview.
- ↑ 13.0 13.1 13.2 When Nick and the other survivors left the speedway before the McKinley Speedway disaster occurred, Jonathan was able to sit in his original seat. Thus, he able to avoid getting crushed by Car 11 and managed lived long enough to be placed after Janet and Hunt on the list.
- ↑ 14.0 14.1 14.2 14.3 14.4 There is contention on whether or not Janet and Lori's deaths in the Springfield Centre Mall were actually avoided or not, as the premonition they were shown in was revealed to be a feint made by Death. Additionally, Janet's death in the premonition would've broken Death's rules, as it occurred out of order, though this could be explained if she survived long enough after being impaled for Lori and Nick to die first. However, the only way the death order in the end could be explained is if Nick saved himself and Lori from an unknown death, allowing the list to cycle back and restart with Janet.
- ↑ According to the newspaper report on the stopping of the disaster, TWO HUNDRED people escaped. Since Iris and Bludworth were the last two to die, this makes her number 199 (with her family being a list descended from her) and Bludworth number 200.
- ↑ In Dead Reckoning, Macy manages to avoid dying multiple times throughout the remainder of the novel. Somehow, these interventions don't allow her to be skipped.
- ↑ 17.0 17.1 17.2 17.3 17.4 17.5 In the End of the Line, Danny saved each of the remaining survivors from the MRI scanner in the exact order that they would have died in.
- ↑ There is a major discrepancy in that Brian Gibbons is claimed to have been a survivor of a disaster called the Lakeview fire, even though he is explicitly shown to have died after Rory Peters intervened in his planned death after a car crash involving the survivors of the Route 23 pileup, which occurred two years before the Lakeview fire. This is most likely a mistake by the prop designers, and the most plausible explanation is that the two Brian Gibbonses are entirely different people who cheated different deaths years apart.
